“Fishing Shacks”

I have been captivated by these little boat houses on Richmond Creek, in Southold, for years. I call them fishing shacks but that’s just me! The sun will cast dramatic shadows across the structures and I have painted them several times in different seasons. This piece wa painted En Plein Aire on a warm Fall day. We set up our painting spots across the creek on a small spit of land. I sketched the piece first then started to lay in the colors. The grasses were turning amber in the fall sun but the greens were still strong in the trees.

I had to work quickly to capture the ever changing light. I look forward to returning to this spot to paint again. See my piece “South Harbor Beach” for another view of these structures,
